Student Guide to public transport

Learn about student discounts on public transport, night bus services, and everything else you need to know as a student travelling in Trøndelag.

Get a 40% student discount

You get a 40% discount on periodic tickets from 30 to 180 days, and on single tickets for trips in three or more zones. With a student periodic ticket, night bus and night tram are included. Use the AtB app to buy your ticket – quick and easy! 

The student discount applies to students up to and including 34 years old with a valid student ID.

As a student, you also get discounts and perks (midtbyen.no) at a variety of shops, restaurants, and other services in Trondheim.

Remember your student ID when travelling

You must always carry a valid student ID and be able to show it to an inspector during a ticket inspection. If you haven’t received your student ID yet, you’ll need to buy an adult ticket – or a child ticket if you are 19 or younger.

How to travel by bus and tram

On the green AtB buses and the tram, we use open ticketing. That means you can board without showing your ticket, as long as you have bought it in advance.

On the blue buses (regional buses), you must board at the front and show your ticket to the driver.

In the app, you can see all available city bikes, Hyre cars, e-bikes and e-scooters from providers in Trøndelag. You choose what to display on the map using filters, and can go straight from the AtB app to the providers’ apps to book and pay.

Another handy feature is live bus tracking on the map. When you search for a trip and tap on a departure, you can see where the bus is in real time.

→ A child ticket is the best option.

Haven’t received your student ID yet?
→ A child or adult ticket is better for now.

Traveling by bus more than three times a week?
→ A period ticket is the most cost-effective.

Using the night bus?
→ A child or student ticket gives the best value.

Note: If you have not recieved your student ID, you can not buy ticket with student discount.

Night buses and the night tram run every weekend – on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have a periodic ticket for student or child, night transport is included in your ticket. Board at the front and show your ticket to the driver.
