• Can I still pay by card on the bus?

  Yes, on some buses. You can pay by bank card on buses with a card terminal.

• What do I do if I only have cash?

  You will need to buy a ticket in another way before you board, for example in the AtB app, by SMS or with a t:card.

  In the initial phase, you will receive information from the driver about what you need to do next time.

• Can I be refused entry to the bus?

  You will not be refused entry to the bus in the initial phase. If you only have cash, the driver will inform and guide you on how to buy a ticket next time.

  The goal is for everyone to receive good information and have the opportunity to adapt.

• I don't use apps – what should I do?

  You can still buy a ticket in several ways:

  • SMS ticket
  • t:card (travel card)
  • Bank card on the bus if available

• Can I buy a ticket for others in the app?

  Yes, you can buy a ticket for others in the AtB app through a dedicated function.

  The person using the ticket must have the AtB app installed. A screenshot of the ticket is not valid.

• What applies to children and young people?

  Students with a t:card school or PocketID travel as before. Students without a valid travel certificate must have a valid ticket before they board. No one will be refused entry in the pilot period. Students will be guided on how to buy a ticket next time.

• How long will the pilot last?

  The pilot project will be evaluated before a decision is made on whether to continue the arrangement.

  We know that it sometimes take time before newcomers to Norway have their own means of payment.

  What you can do:

  • You can enter into a business agreement for travel cards. The travel cards can be preloaded with f. ex. 10 trips.
  • You can use a requisition for single trips. We will provide information on what is considered a valid requisition.

  If the person has their own means of payment, tickets can be purchased in the usual way. Please note that school routes do not always have a card terminal on board.

• For those working in schools and education

  Schools and educational institutions can purchase single trips using a requisition.
  Contact customer service to learn what is considered a valid requisition.

  This does not affect school transport.

• The child wants to bring a friend home from school. What should I do?

  You can no longer pay by cash. If your child brings a friend on the bus, and the friend is not entitled to school transport, you need to buy a ticket.

  You can easily send a ticket to your child in the AtB app. All tickets can be shared in the app. Both sender and recipient need to have the AtB app installed and logged in. 

  Another option is the travel card (t:kort). You can order it in AtB’s online shop and top it up with a periodc ticket or a carnet ticket.

• Is it allowed to refuse cash payment on the bus?

  Yes. In 2024, the Norwegian Parliament adopted changes to the Financial Contracts Act. These came into force on 1 October 2024. The law states that payment for transport by bus, rail, and other transport is not covered by the obligation to accept cash. This means passengers do not have the right to pay with cash on board the bus.

  The pilot project with cash-free payment is therefore in line with current law.
